Last Thursday saw the inaugural Melbourne team bowling competition, a much anticipated event in the Australian sporting calendar. Finally, after months of practice, it was time to don the bowling slippers (and optional lycra) and seize the moment.
As expected, both semis were nervy affairs with everyone scared of losing (and missing out on the free buffet). In semi-final 1 Team Addison prevailed thanks largely to the impressive Jesse (who went on to win the individual award) handing out a bowling masterclass. In semi-final 2, Team Rodrigues de Oliveira edged a scrappy game to also make the final with Nathan just pipping Anastasia to the coveted “throw it as hard as possible into the gutter” award.
By now the free beer and testosterone were both flowing freely. The 3rd/4th place play-off went the way of Team Field as Kent put in a fine display of “power-bowls” while his opposite number, Randima from Team Mah, valiantly grappled bowling balls half her body weight but to no avail.
The final was disapointingly one-sided, with Team Addison wilting under the pressure and unable to compensate for their captain’s alarming loss of form, which at one stage saw him ridiculed by some independent observers.
Eventually, with a formidable average of 130, Team Rodrigues de Oliveira walked away with the trophy, a moment that will live in their hearts forever.
Although starting its life as a local bowling competition, The Melbourne Team have boldly decided to offer other challengers the right to compete for the much coveted trophy.
