The Canberra Formula 1 Grand Prix was held on the 12th May 2010 at the Fyshwick Circuit. All the top drivers attended; Jenson Button (Graeme), Lewis Hamilton (Shaune), Rubin Barrichello (Quinten), Fernando Alonso (Graham), Felipe Massa (Richard) and it was great to see Michael Schumacher (Simon) come out of retirement.
The first session saw a dusty track with lots of slides and slower times. Jenson, true to his current championship form, showed his strength by beating the field by over half a second. No wonder he is leading the 2010 Formula 1 championship! Michael struggled at the back of the pack; questions are now being raised about his return to Formula 1.
The second session saw improved times by all drivers; some overtaking, lots of dices and clever tactics. The most obvious observation was Michael Schumacher’s come back; this session saw a huge improvement by over 2 seconds. Although, still not fast enough to lift him out of last place. The second session also saw the marshal come into play; showing a number of yellow flags due to spins and the occasional blue flag for slow drivers to move aside. Although, Fernando Alonso seemed to suffer from tunnel vision and wouldn’t let anyone pass.
The break between sessions saw the drivers mingle and discuss aches and pains… who would have thought highly trained professionals would suffer so much…. Michael Schumacher was obviously pleased by his improvement in speed. Jenson, Rubin and Lewis were happy being in the top three moving into the final session. Requests to the marshal were made to check Jenson’s car as his lead was significant over two sessions.
The third session resulted in very fast times and more improvements by all drivers. Rubin made a run for the lead, only to be tipped on the last lap by Jenson. Felipe was the quiet achiever, sneaking into third place. Lewis and Jenson diced for a number of laps until an unfortunate racing incident occurred; resulting in Jenson slamming the wall and stopping the race (Reminiscent of the Hill / Schumacher incident of 1994 in Adelaide).
The incident was raised to the marshal and a decision is still pending Jenson and Lewis had some active discussion about racing rules and etiquette falling on deaf ears from both camps. Michael improved, sneaking into second last place leaving Fernando Alonso to clean up the last spot if only Fernando wore the white “Stig” outfit rather than the black who knows what could have been.
A fantastic time was had by all. We are now all sharing war stories regarding bruising around our hips and backs, as well as sore feet it is a tough gig being a Formula 1 driver!
