Wednesday, June 22nd 2011 will go down as one of the great days for Altis Consulting, as we were recognised by BRW Magazine with two Employment Awards. First, we were chosen as the 10th Best Place to Work in Australia, which was supplemented with 1st as the Proudest Company in Australia. Our press release outlines the specific highlights that contributed to our awards however what was most important to me was our ability to score so highly as a consulting business.
Most of the organisations in the Top 50 are companies that benefit from a large home office, which makes it easier for the focus of culture development. We are not that lucky. First, we have four different offices, and secondly the majority of our team members are located on-site at our client offices. Therefore our focus is less on building offices with Bean Bags and gaming consoles, and more on ensuring that we hire the right people.
Our company ethos is “Connecting with Courage, Heart, and Insight”, which means we are very selective in who we hire. Over the last 13 years, we have had many opportunities to grow the business faster but have taken a conservative approach to ensure we grow at a pace in which we can find team members who have the right ‘mojo’.
We conduct a minimum of 4 hours of interviews with every candidate, which involves having at least three Altis team members in agreement before we can hire them. We have tried a variety of screening mechanisms but have found we need at least 3 face-to-face interviews to triangulate whether the candidate is right for us. It also gives the interviewee a very clear understanding of how Altis works and our expectations, which helps them to determine if we’re right for them.
We have a lot of unique personalities and backgrounds within the business but at the end of the day there are a few things that everyone has in common:
- A strong commitment to support fellow team members
- A passion to deliver client outcomes
- An interest in both technical and business drivers
- Enjoy connecting with other team members, clients and partners
Being awarded 10th Best Place to Work in Australia was a great accolade for our organisation, and a positive reinforcement that we are building something special.
