Auckland Big Picture Wine Experience

Altis Consulting employees at wine tastingOur wine tasting was not an ordinary wine tasting but a “journey of discovery”.

We were first introduced to a few local NZ wines, and then guided into the “aroma room” to learn about wine making, tasting AND smelling. The room is full of the different components you can find in a bottle of wine. We were divided into teams of two and went around the room to see if we can “smell out” the various components of wine. Sure, some were easy, like peach or citrus but some like the smell of musk or smoke or hay were neither easy nor good to smell!

Apart from learning about the basic things that can affect the taste of wine, we also learnt that the French makes the best oaks and is used for some of the higher class wines or the “reserves”.

We were then led to an auditorium for a 30 minute film made in Auckland on the various wine makers describing the features of their own wine. We got to taste each of their wines while watching the film. Our wine tasting journey ended with a “Test” to identify 6 components of a wine by smelling.

Despite pouring down with rain, the day did not spoil our fun together as we walked down to Sale Street for more beer and pizza “tasting”. It was a great night out for everyone.
